Plan your Champagne trip
Small Champagne growers worth seeking out
The large houses explain Champagne on a grand scale. Small growers make the region personal. You may taste in a modest room, meet someone from the family and hear exactly what happened in one village or one harvest.
Expect a different kind of visit
A grower tasting is not automatically a guided cellar tour. Sometimes you can walk in and taste; sometimes the family is working and nobody is available. Payment for tastings has become common, and that is reasonable when somebody sets aside time and opens several bottles.
Why these addresses interest us
The villages of the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims give you a much clearer feeling for place than a day spent only in the cities. Producers such as Diebolt-Vallois in Cramant or Barnaut in Bouzy also make it easier to compare Chardonnay-led and Pinot Noir-led styles.
Make the appointment simple
Write a short message with the date, number of people and preferred language. Say whether you hope for a tasting or a full visit. You will get a better answer, and the producer can tell you what is realistic that week.
What works well
- Buy only what you genuinely enjoy
- Allow more time than the tasting itself
- Never promise a spontaneous visit to your group
