Plan your Champagne trip

Which Champagne houses should you visit in Reims?

Reims is the best base when you want monumental cellars, a lively French city and several excellent visits without moving hotels. The houses are not interchangeable, though: one visit may focus on Roman chalk pits, another on production, art or the history of a famous label.

For the underground spectacle

Ruinart, Taittinger, Pommery and Veuve Clicquot are known for the crayères beneath the city. The atmosphere is memorable, but the stories and formats differ, so compare the language, duration and route before choosing.

For more than cellars

Pommery works especially well if you enjoy contemporary art, while the neighbouring Villa Demoiselle adds an Art Nouveau interior to the day. Lanson gives a broader view of production and is convenient when you want a visit that feels less detached from the working process.

Make Reims part of the visit

Leave time for Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Halles du Boulingrin and the shops around the centre. Reims deserves more than a quick transfer between two cellars, and its restaurants are a good reason to keep the evening free.

What works well

  • Reserve the grand houses before you travel
  • Check the tour language for the exact time slot
  • Use the city tram or a taxi rather than driving between tastings
